Greenville Hospital System Swamp Rabbit Tram Trail
PRESS RELEASES
Recreation District Receives Grant for GHS Swamp Rabbit Tram Trail
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
August 14, 2008
A $10,000 grant from Newman’s Own Foundation will bring the Greenville Hospital System Swamp Rabbit Tram Trail one step closer to completion. Recreation District Director of Greenways, Natural & Historic Resources Ty Houck announced the award at the August meeting of the District’s Board of Commissioners.
Houck further explained that the grant was unsolicited. “Newman’s Own Organic products came to us recognizing the value and importance that greenways contribute to a community’s overall health,” he said.
This $6.2 million trail will connect Travelers Rest with the City of Greenville’s Linky Stone Park via a 9.2 mile bike / walking trail with long term plans for an environmentally friendly tram to provide additional service. The GHS Swamp Rabbit Tram Trail is the first project of a countywide Greenways Master Plan that is being crafted through a partnership with the Recreation District and the county’s six municipalities.
Houck offered additional updates noting that construction has begun in Travelers Rest, bridge reports are completed, and that residents can look for installation of pedestrian signs and crosswalks.
The Greenville County Department of Public Works, one of many project partners, will provide labor to pave the trail by the end of the year. A $1 million partnership with Greenville Hospital System contributes to signage, marketing, and safety components on the trail. The project is one of several projects that comprised the TRAC Plan (Tourism, Recreation, and Athletics Coalition) and funded through the hospitality tax.
There has been a lot of interest and a lot going on so there are few new things to tell you about.

- ORGANIC SOIL STABILIZER - The Roadzyme demonstration is scheduled for this Friday, February 29th. All day on the GHS Swamp Rabbit Tram Trail near the dam at the Furman Lake. Park at the student center and follow the signs. This is an exciting organic road building product and we want to hear your impressions of it. It is less expensive than asphalt, gives the same of type of surface, and is non-toxic to the river and the environment.
- TRAIL WORK DAY -March 15th trail work day – Lead by the Leadership Greenville Alumni Association, 9am – noon. Meet at the intersection of the trail and Sulphur Springs Rd. Wear clothes and gloves that will stand-up to pricker bushes. Bring water and a snack. We will be collecting debris leftover from the rail removal and loading it into a dumpster. Anyone with a small truck and trailer, Skid steer, mini-excavator, or other vehicle they are willing to lend to haul pile debris, please contact me via e-mail. Everyone else come when you can to help get the southern section of the trail ready for use.
- NEW MAP - There is an updated Google-based map on our website www.gcrd.org. Click on the Swamp Rabbit tile and follow the link to “view map” from there you can use various tools including zooming in to find where the trail crosses Sulphur Springs Rd and how to get driving directions from your house to the trail. Also the location of the Roadzyme demonstration is identified so you can get directions to that location.
- TRAIL GRANT – We are applying for a $100,000 trail building grant. If you would like to be involved with the process we could use help in:
- 1. Creating maps for the application
- 2. Researching types of animal species noted on the site
- 3. Proof-reading
- 4. Writing and soliciting letters of supports from individuals, organizations and companies.
- 5. Creating the final product – the binder of information to submit.
- Grant deadline is March 21st.
- GREENWAYS PARTNER – Over 600 people and organizations have become Greenways Partners by “buying” a section of the GHS Swamp Rabbit Tram Trail. Become a Greenways Partner today. Visit www.gcrd.org and click on the Swamp Rabbit link. It makes a great “kid’s” birthday present. It is something they will never outgrow.
